Acupuncture for Pregnancy & Postpartum Recovery
Lorna will be back in the clinic from 8th September, after taking some time out on maternity leave with her little boy. Having recently gone through pregnancy herself, she found acupuncture to be an invaluable support. Not only for the physical challenges of pregnancy and recovery but also for the emotional journey that comes with it.
At Health Point Clinic, we specialise in supporting people with fertility concerns, and many of our patients continue their acupuncture journey right the way through pregnancy and beyond. We know that pregnancy, especially after fertility struggles, can feel both exciting and overwhelming. That is why we are here to support you at every stage, from the first positive test to birth and postpartum recovery.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes. When carried out by a licensed practitioner and member of the British Acupuncture Council, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment during pregnancy. Lorna also has specialist post graduate training and is a Fertility Support Trained practitioner as well as a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network. Every treatment begins with a thorough consultation, looking not only at your pregnancy health but also your overall wellbeing, to create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
How can acupuncture help in pregnancy?
Acupuncture is often used to ease many of the common symptoms of pregnancy, including:
- Morning sickness
- Back pain & pelvic pain
- Headaches & migraines
- Heartburn & constipation
- Tiredness & low energy
- Anxiety & insomnia
From Lorna's own experience, acupuncture offered her a calm space each week, a much-needed pause from the busyness of life, while supporting her body to adapt to pregnancy changes.
Acupuncture & labour preparation
While acupuncture does not “induce” labour in the medical sense, it can help prepare your body and mind for birth. Specific treatment protocols are used in the final weeks of pregnancy to encourage relaxation, reduce stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline), and support the release of oxytocin, the hormone that helps labour progress naturally. Many women find these sessions create a sense of calm and readiness as they approach birth.
Acupuncture for postpartum recovery
After labour, acupuncture can play an important role in recovery. It helps restore strength and energy, supports emotional wellbeing, and can ease common postnatal challenges such as:
- Aches and pains following delivery
- Breastfeeding difficulties (including blocked ducts)
- Fatigue and low mood
- Anxiety and sleep struggles
Lorna found her postnatal acupuncture sessions to be a much-needed reset, an hour on the treatment table often felt like extra rest, topped up with happy hormones to see her through those early demanding weeks.
